This blog post was originally shared summer of 2014:
Not knowing my Airbnb neighborhood of Neukölln before arriving to Berlin, I quickly went online to see what was cool in the neighborhood. This gem was the first to appear, so off I went to explore this beer garden on top of a mall parking garage. Now, yes I understand this seems like an unusual place for a rooftop, but one: Berlin’s skyline is short, only structure taller is their TV tower and second: all of the cool places in Berlin have been abandoned or are being reused for drinking and partying. This is exactly why this location is so cool, especially during the hot summer months. You can’t fathom being inside, and Klunkerkranich is the perfect escape for a refreshing beer and cool breeze.
Now keep in mind it gets busy as the sun goes down and there is a small entrance fee of 3 euro after 6pm. So sometimes the early bird does get the worm, or in this case an extra beer instead of waiting and paying for entry. Oh, and a tip I was late to learn in Berlin, they are big with recycling so it’s important to return your bottles after drinking to get your money back. So when it says 2 euro a beer and then ask you for 3 euro, this isn’t because they’re ripping you off as I suspected, it’s to support a greener planet. Something I can fully get behind! Just like enjoying one of the best views of Berlin with a cold beer in hand. Best part of this place for me, it’s now only one block from my new flat starting in September! Hope to see some of you all there, because I’m sure to be making it my new office away from home.
